The Content Conundrum

Why content is important. I asked a friend at a certain media company what was their mission and vision recently. Sure, it sounds very cliched, but as I surfed local TV content recently, I was thinking, "What is the big picture agenda here?" Yes, entertainment, of course. We all know that. Then what?

As we are in the rebuilding period of our nation, what is our content industry doing? More of the same? Are we looking deeper into the soul of the nation to produce meaningful content?

What has it got to do with this Taiping news (above)? Well, stuff like this keeps happening (the country's first ever airport has reportedly been sold to a developer) cos there's no real appreciation for our culture and history. And it shouldn't be left to these small persatuans to fight for such things. The masses need to be informed, and this can be done through popular content.

Yeah I know, times are tough. Revenue comes first. So maybe I'm just wasting time writing about this stuff. But I would LOVE to be proven wrong...

The Liverpool Champions Parade: I Was There!

"It’s the Jurgen Express, mate,” proclaimed a passenger on our 11am Virgin Train from London to Liverpool last Sunday.
By this time, more fans of the newly-crowned European champions had boarded, building further the sense of pure joy and anticipation.
In my ears then, ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ began to play, and as I looked out the window, I saw wind turbines on an English country farm spinning, almost in sync with the uplifting melody of The Verve’s classic tune.

I looked past the wondrous vista dotted with sheep, stallions and cottages and entertained the feeling of pride swelling deep within me.
I always tell people I’ve been a Liverpool fan since I was a dot on an ultrasound scan. A bit of an exaggeration, but this is the only team I’ve supported all my life.
And like all longtime fans, I’ve been through the good and bad times.
The night before, we had sealed an unprecedented sixth European title.  Watching the match in a hotel room in London, I wondered if this was the beginning (finally), of our greatest years yet.
Earlier at the London Euston train station, I was greeted by the sight of fellow Reds, decked out in our colours, waiting for their trains to the North West.
We smiled and nodded at each other.
I was wearing the current season’s Liverpool kit when a local who introduced himself as Joe, struck up a conversation.
He, too, was on the way to the victory parade, but via Crewe where he would meet with his mates and drive up together. We talked about the Madrid win, the close call in the league and our love for the club.
“I have more respect for fans in Asia like yourself,” he said.
“YOU’RE SO FAR AWAY, YET YOU FEEL SO CLOSE TO THE CLUB.”
I smiled in agreement and replied: “Yeah, and you know, the jerseys are rather expensive for the average Malaysians these days, but most of us buy them every season.”
Another Scouser gave me a high five as we walked to the train later.
“I haven’t slept since last night, mate,” he said, adding he was also at the victory parade in 2005.
As the train reached the Liverpool Lime Street Station, the PA guy urged us to be as loud as possible and sing as we disembarked the train. And that’s exactly what hundreds of us did. Oh yes, the party had begun.

Hear Me Rant!

I guess I'm actually jaded. There I've said it.

I understand the need to create constant content on socmed for "personal branding", but most of the time I can't be bothered, to be honest.

It's a little bit of "been there, done that", and a little bit of "do I have to be THAT pretentious?"

People talk about being "authentic", but writing for SEOs, complete with the required paragraph breaks, ain't exactly authentic lah. Perhaps it's that writer's bug again i.e. I love writing, except for the writing bit.

But yeah, having created content for basically all platforms out there for a good part of the past two decades, I am now just this tired and cynical dude.

Can't wait to realise my true dream of just kicking it at a secluded beachfront property, away from other humans, physically, and virtually.

OK, rant over. Have a great week ahead!

The Comeback of Comebacks by Liverpool!

What a brilliant, epic comeback by Liverpool! Oh man, where do I even begin to try and sum up what just happened? 0-3 down in the Champions League semi-final, to Barcelona no less, Jurgen Klopp's men put up a performance for the ages to triumph 4-0 on the night, earning respect even from his biggest critics.
So let me just start there. Jurgen Klopp. What a man, what a manager. I remember when he was flying into Liverpool some 4 years ago, fans were actually tracking his flight path. From the get-go, it seemed like a perfect fit. Larger-than-life, charismatic, a man with a plan; his optimism and spirit immediately became contagious.
But really, it's not just all hugs and rah-rah-rah. He brought along with him German discipline and preciseness. From transfer deals, to player fitness to tactical astuteness, Klopp has invested so much time and effort in getting everything that he wants.
Last week in the 1st leg, he was let down by the team's poor finishing, and some criticised him for playing Wijnaldum in the injured Firmino's position. But we could see now what he was going for. Wijnaldum popped up with 2 excellent goals last night; the second, tying up the contest.
And of course, we now know from the players that Klopp was confident of a great result all along. And he made everyone BELIEVE.

And what about the players, huh? I can't even decide on my Man of the Match last night. Each one of them gave their absolute everything! With Firmino and Salah injured, replacement hitmen Origi and Shaqiri more than did their part; Origi with 2 goals, and Shaq with an assist.
Mane ran and ran and ran. Hendo was heroic. Old man Milner put in yet another solid shift. And Fabinho, oh damn, Fabinho. He was a monster in midfield. Picking up the pieces always (and a couple of fights as well, haha).
And our defense held up well, although Barcelona had a couple of clear chances in the first half. Virgil and Matip always stood firm, but it was sad to see Robertson KO-ed by an injury. Young Trent? Oh, man. What a genius of a player, who can only get better. Note to Liverpool owners: sign him up for the next 10 years!
And yes, Alisson Becker. The Brazilian earned a year's wages just based on last night's performance. There were moments when my heart skipped a beat, but the Thor-lookalike thwarted everything Barcelona threw at him. What a bargain for GBP67m!
Finally, hats off to Anfield! What a rocking atmosphere! Another brilliant European night made even special by the fantastic fans lucky enough to watch it live.
Oh man, I can go on and on. What a night. What a feeling. What a win. THIS MEANS MORE indeed. Onwards to the final! #YNWA
