When We Tag Teamed With The WWE To Create Content History!

All the talk today (well, at least amongst wrestling fans) is how on this date, 1.1.2025, the WWE 

(World Wrestling Entertainment) is creating history by moving its content to the world's biggest streaming platform, Netflix. 

How much is this deal worth for the WWE? According to reports, a whopping USD5 billion! 

This also means that the WWE Network has been officially terminated; including on astro, here in Malaysia. 

A quick survey on social media has shown that WWE fans are all for this historic move. It's a win-win for everyone. What's not to like, they ask?

Even on the Malaysian WWE fan groups on FB, they're welcoming this with open arms. "Gila banyak show lama-lama boleh tengok!"

But allow me to just remind everyone that some years ago, a Malaysian platform became the first to stream exclusive WWE content, and for free too! And yours truly had a small part in it. Ahem ahem. 

So here's what happened: On 6 August 2010, Media Prima Berhad launched our own streaming platform called tonton. Oh yes, unless you've been living on Mars, I'm pretty sure you'd know what tonton is.

The grand launch was held at the Sunway Convention Centre and we had some 1,200 people coming; clients, the media, agency people, celebs, shareholders etc. Three speakers were lined up; Ahmad Izham Omar, Paul Moss, and myself, and we took turns to present the different parts of the tonton story.

Izham came out first to unveil the brand, then Paul talked about the tech aspects, then I came out to 

talk about the "sexy stuff", CONTENT.

I was decked out like the WWE superstar The Rock. Even my entrance theme started with: "If you smellllllll..."

Why??? Because apart from the 30,000 hours of TV gold, exclusive Web Content, and Customised Channels, tonton also offered WWE Classics!

It featured the greatest matches and stars of professional wrestling including Hulk Hogan, Andre The Giant, Randy “Macho Man” Savage, and The Rock! 

I remember a long negotiation process with WWE execs that took place in Singapore, Cannes and our own office in Sri Pentas. But in the end, we made history by being the first local streaming service to offer WWE content!

Ah, those were the days lah. If you smellll....

The GUA Review Show Returns

Hey peeps, totally forgot to plug this. After an absence of a couple of months, the GUA Review Show is back! To recap: It's a semi-serious online show where we review the latest in films, music and DVDs. It's hosted by yours truly and features a line-up of distinguished guests.

For the "comeback" episode, we reviewed the heist film "Takers". Next week will be a tad "panas" tho as we talk about the controversial film, "2 Alam".

Where Awesome Happens: TonTon

So, it's been 3 weeks since we unleashed tonton.com.my on to the world, and the buzz online has continued to be positive. Hurrah!

And tonton continues to wow people with fantabulous content, as promised.

Not only do we have the best of local shows up now, tonton is steadily delivering a catalogue of other great titles including WWE classics, Korean soap-opera "My Girl", Dilbert animated series and Films & Stars entertainment news.

The latest of the lot are Hollywood series "Grey's Anatomy" and the first of a long list of movies, "Sepi".

TonTon.com.my Has Arrived

Yup, we made history this past Friday evening when we unleashed http://www.tonton.com.my/ on to the world! 12 months in the making, TonTon is a video portal like no other.

World Class. Intelligent. Amazing Content.

The launch itself was quite something, if I may say so. The aim was to put up something people will remember for a long time, and I think we managed to do just that.

Held at the Sunway Convention Centre, the launch had a bit of showbiz and pizzaz; punctuated by presentations by Izham, Paul and myself.

Hats off to the production team that came up with the concept and were flawless in their execution. Logistics was handled by our own Alt Media team and as usual, our guys delivered as well.

The opening gambit featured Showdown champs Wakaka Crew doing an incredible choreography that drew wondrous gasps for its sheer bravery and creativity.

Izham then came on first to intro the event. The invitation didn’t say what this was all about, so the audience was simply transfixed, waiting for the eventual announcement.
....Excerpts from Izham’s presentation:

We believe in an amazing, engaging, interactive future for media, how we make great content, how we bring everyone together, how we interact with everyone, yes the basic idea of media...but for a new age. We believe in this future and we spent a lot of time on how to get to this dream from where we are now.

I think.....we’ve finally cracked it. I really think we have. I think we may be able to offer to you, from today, a beautiful digital solution. A game-changing solution.

Then TonTon was revealed, and everyone went WHOA!!!

Then came Paul to talk more about TonTon’s features and advertising offerings.

It was great to see the huge turnout. Big guns from the industry, clients, agencies and celebs were there. And I think we delivered the message loud and clear.

Sunway Convention Centre was the venue and we put up a rocking show to introduce tonton to the whole wide world. What a rush!
