Malaysian Politicians STILL Say The Darndest Things!

The first one was a huge success (it dominated the MPH charts, I understand), so why not do a volume 2? But before I go any further, I have to formally state that I am terribly jealous of the book’s publisher and compiler, Amir Muhammad. Cos this is the sort of book I’ve always dreamt of publishing myself, and Amir’s done two bloody volumes already. Boring betul.

But let it be known that I have plans to launch a series of my own, tentatively called: “Amazing Sex Stories From Malaysia”, which will be a compilation of bizarre sex-related tales (duh) from this beloved country of ours. Yes, I’m so looking forward to dominating that MPH chart. So, hah!

Anyway, volume 2 of “Malaysian Politicians Say The Darndest Things” is out now in stores and it’s a jolly good read. Especially since Yours Truly is indirectly one of the subject matters!

Page 50 quotes DPM Najib Tun Razak:

“The (newspaper) spoke of this and that position… and I’m not talking about positions during a football game or the (government’s) Middle East position.”

...

And the footnote says:

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak expressing his displeasure at a sex-filled edition of the Weekend Mail. The paper, which is normally associated with consumer causes, had been around for over a century but was trying to rebrand itself. Under the general heading ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’, the front-page alone contained the phrases “Fetish Files”, “Pole Dancing Tips”, “Kinky Caked” and “Hooters!” The editor was then suspended.

My only sore point is that Amir never asked if I wanted my picture to be included. Dude, you owe me a 2-piece chicken set at Popeyes…

My Soundtrack Problem...

So I’ve got a weird problem. Here goes: The soundtrack to my life is rather sucky now. Allow me to explain.

From as long as I can remember, I’ve always been into music. My late parents were musical people, and I guess that’s how I became music-dependent. And I can still remember the tunes that were constantly drilled into my skull – Elvis, Johnny Mathis, Matt Monroe, Paul Anka, Engelbert Humperdinck… And remember as well my late parents’ “get together” song – “Misty” by Mr. Mathis.

Of course as I got older, I developed my own taste and fancies. The 80s was the ultimate decade for me. I remember it started with Men At Work, then Michael Jackson and Prince. And when the British New Wave movement begun, I became an instant convert. Wham! and Duran Duran were my favourites, but I didn’t shy away from the likes of Spandau Ballet, Thompson Twins, Tears For Fears, OMD, and solo artistes like Howard Jones and Nik Kershaw.

Along the way, I also discovered hair metal in a big way. So there was a period of time where I was living between a “diskang” and “Mat Rock” existence. Ratt, Cinderella, Def Leppard, Poison, Motley Crue, GNR and of course, Bon Jovi were just some of my faves. And yes, I’m also one the biggest Search fans you’ll ever find.

The 90s then gave me - gave US - the whole grunge juggernaut. I don’t think I have to name any names here…

Anyway, music has been more than mere entertainment for me. My general existence, my moods, have always been influenced by the music that surrounds me. And all the acts I’ve mentioned above have contributed tons of songs that are tagged to significant memories in this life of mine.

And it’s just awesome how I can press play to a particular tune and the sights and even smells of that moment in time will automatically come back to me. Some examples:

- Aha’s “Take On Me” will take me back to my form 3 class when everyone wore leather wristbands and had the Harket haircut. I can still hear the chatter and chaos by the very first keyboard riff

- “Careless Whisper” by George Michael will remind me of this very specific Penang holiday when I had a crush on a distant cousin (hey, it happens ok?)

- I can remember the exact moment when I first heard Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. It was in a dorm, and I was sitting on a table and listening to the tune on an old boom box while about 15 other guys were having a quick smoke or/and a quick nap in between classes

- Prince’s “When Doves Cry” would remind me of that day I watched the “Purple Rain” movie on the VHS player, and saw Appolonia’s huhus for a few secs before my late mom asked me to look away

- Anything by Michael Learns To Rock will take me back to those days of being a young magistrate in Miri. And as I learned a couple of years back, MLTR is still the biggest thing there since sliced bread

But for these past three, four years, nothing has really stuck or made a significant impact. Well, save for a couple of songs that I wrote lyrics to that got me to Juara Lagu in consecutive years. Apart from those, I’m struggling to “escape” with a good tune that takes me somewhere I need to be which isn’t the present reality.

Even as I’m buying CDs to load up my iPod, I find myself paying for all-time-favourites rather than the best of the new era. And this was the last CD that I bought…

So yeah, it IS kind of a big deal to me that my current soundtrack sucks. And it’s rather ironic that while the past few years have been filled with some of my biggest accomplishments, career-wise, I can’t put together a mix-tape that’ll cheer me up during those rainy days…

Lelaki Boleh!

Give me a break! So now women have a whole ministry to call their own. Yippee! What I find sad about this whole thing though, is that us men have done nothing but watch this latest development without registering even the smallest form of protest.

Blind Date

When I was young and single (this was way back in the 80s), I constantly subjected myself to blind dates. Not that I was a desperate case or anything but the “is she a Raquel Welch or a Roseanne Barr” type of question always heightened the mystery and anticipation would turn the whole dating game into quite an experience.

GUA's New Look Launched!

Oh yes, GUA.COM.MY 2.0 was launched earlier today. We took over the main stage at the Youth ’09 PWTC and delivered a good show for the unveiling of a fresh new GUA. Here’s the lowdown in pictures…

The whole thing started with me playing percussions with the awesomely talented White Percussion Group!

It's for real ok? The new look was then unveiled at the end of the performance...

Joe Flizzow then tore up the place with his latest single "Bergerak" which he re-wrote especially for GUA! (pic from the rehearsal though)

Then GangStarz finalists Infinatez did an acapella version of the GUA theme song ...

GUA fine-looking hosts were then introduced...

Office Party Time!

So we had a rather belated Xmas/New Year party today at the office. And what a do it was! For starters, everyone got a present via the Secret Santa program : )

And then there was the glorious food: Aglia Oglio spaghetti, mushroom soup, lasagna, pizzas, bread & butter pudding, and the highlight of course - A BIG FAT YUMMY TURKEY...

...

No surpises then there were smiles all around...

And here's what my Secret Santa got me. Cool eh?

And I just couldn't get enough of the turkey. BURP!

Botak! Botak! Botak!

So in conjunction with GUA's new look to be launched pretty soon, I came up with the idea sometime back to shave my head and basically get others to do it as well.

And after a couple of false starts, it was decided that today was the day that it was actually gonna happen! So we got Nick, who'd already done his, to take me and two others, Boon and Yusman, to this salon in SS2 to get the job done.

To be honest, I was in two minds right until the end. I got sick in the stomach. Rasa macam nak kena sunat sekali lagi pun ada... Damn nervous lah.

Once we got there, Boon volunteered to go first... and he, um well, looked pretty fine after the whole experience! Woohoo - what a great start!

Then it was my turn. And this was how it unfolded...

Overall I'm satisfied lah. Don't look too ugly... Haha.

Then came Yusman's turn, and he raised the bar by going for a Mohawk!

Nick on ther other hand will be spraying his dome by this Friday. Talk about dedication!

In any case, we totally rock now dudes!

Meet The New RTM - Same Like The Old RTM!

So in case you didn’t know, RTM rebranded both its channels and debuted them this past New Year’s Day. TV1 is all about news and info, while TV2 is dubbed the “Dunia Ria” channel, airing more of the entertainment stuff including movies, dramas and musicals.

Both channels now have nifty new logos and by golly, TV2 has even aired quality (and expensive) movies like “X-Men” and “The Matrix”. BUT just as I was about to be turned into a believer, I caught an entertainment special called “Fiesta” something.

Big mistake.

The show features a few local singers (won’t be naming names here), covering international and local hit songs. In the first place, it’s rather funny that these established stars were asked to sing other people’s songs. As hard as I tried, I could not see the point.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the worst thing about it. Think about video clips from 25 years ago and what made them grossly cheesy – this show had them all. It’s like one day, the producers decide to drive around the artists and conveniently stop wherever they think might be a good location, slap on some clothes on the artistes and make them sing there and then.

The result - you’ll see these people pouting and singing in the middle of Bangsar, LRT stations and roads with adequate lighting.

And of course, taman-taman bunga with nice colourful flowers and trimmed lalang.

And it wouldn’t be complete without some back-up dancers, would it? The kind who forget the choreography and decked in clothes from the Uji Rashid & Hail Amir bundle sale.

I won’t go into the details of the song selection, but I do have to mention that for the finale, where all the artistes congregate at Dataran Merdeka (but of course), the song of choice was…. “The Final Countdown” by Europe.

‘Cos you know, the tune is hip and happening… and this is 1988.
