Yes, I Was Quoted On Michael Jackson - Sorry...

Not on his death; but in 2005, when Michael Jackson was found not guilty of child molestation charges, I got a call from AP who asked me for a quote. I was FHM editor then and that quote was carried by the press the world over. It made me famous for a bit. I even got messages from the folks at FHM UK "congratulating" me.
...

And what did I say? In Kuala Lumpur, Mohamad Zulkifli Abdul Jalil, editor of the Malaysian edition of FHM magazine, said Jackson's career is tarnished regardless of the verdict.
"I hate to say it, but he's doomed," he said.

Here's the full story:
Jacko Fans Celebrate Worldwide
Tuesday, June 14, 2005
LONDON — Michael Jackson (search) fans around the world celebrated his string of "not guilty" verdicts in a California child molestation case and expressed hope Tuesday that his musical career would now hit new heights.

But others said the pop star's ordeal had damaged him and his career beyond repair.

In the Philippines, flamboyant former first lady Imelda Marcos cheered the verdict.

"Once again, the U.S. judicial system worked," she said. "God bless America!"
Jackson, 46, was acquitted Monday of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor in 2003 and gave the boy wine to facilitate the molestation. He also was accused of conspiring with members of his inner circle to hold the accuser and his family captive to get them to rebut a damaging documentary on Jackson's life.

It was a total legal victory met with jubilation among Jackson supporters.

In Romania, where Jackson is widely popular after he played two huge concerts in 1992 and 1996 and donated a playground to a Bucharest orphanage, fans were elated.

"It couldn't have been a better verdict, although it was the only verdict they could have come up with," said Alexandru Ciocodeica. He and other fans said they were crying with joy.
Australian fan Dorin Birkental, 22, traveled to California in April to observe part of the trial.
"It made me very angry because I saw Michael Jackson sitting in the courtroom and he was just so frail and thin," she said. "It took so much out of him. All he's ever done is just do good and make amazing music."

Others doubted the one-time King of Pop could regain his throne.

"The magic is forgotten," said Valdeci Pereira, an evangelist preacher in the Dona Marta shantytown in Rio de Janeiro where Jackson filmed the video "They Don't Care About Us" in 1996. "People will never listen to his music the same way again."

In Kuala Lumpur, Mohamad Zulkifli Abdul Jalil, editor of the Malaysian edition of FHM magazine, said Jackson's career is tarnished regardless of the verdict.

"I hate to say it, but he's doomed," he said.

In Taiwan, 19-year-old waitress Cindy Chu said on her way to work Tuesday that Jackson would find it hard to put the trial behind him, despite the acquittal.

"He might not find success again, because there will be a shadow over him for the rest of his life," she said.

In China, deejay Felix Hu of China Radio International predicted the damage to Jackson's image will only be temporary.

"For a while, we were advised not to play Michael Jackson songs when he was first charged. But now it's OK," said the Beijing-based Hu.

"The accusations were a blow to his image. But if he continues to produce good music, people will soon forget," Hu said. "Look at (search)and George Michael (search). People have forgotten the bad things that happened in their private lives."

In France, Yves Gautier, author of "Michael Jackson, The Other Side of the Mirror (search)," said Jackson still has loyal core of fans in France and Asia, and could organize a tour when he recovers his health.

"He is a fighter," Gautier told France's LCI television. "He needs to work for financial reasons but most of all for his ego."

Paddy Power, an Irish bookmaker, offered odds of 14-1 on the possibility of Jackson hitting No. 1 on the British pop chart with a new single. More likely, in Power's view, was that Jackson would sell his ranch, Neverland, or his share in the Beatles' songbook — both were offered at even odds.
Fans were relieved just to see the trial over.

"The minutes before the verdict were the most nervous moments of my life. Now, these are the happiest moments of my life," said Kent Vilhemsson, 21, watching from Skovde, Sweden.

In Japan, officials at Wakita Co., Ltd., which manufactures and sells men's clothing under the brand "Michael Jackson," were delighted at the news.

The brand was launched before Jackson's arrest, but the publicity over the allegations has affected sales, said Junichi Ota, managing director at Wakita in Gifu, central Japan.

"To be honest, we feel relieved," Ota said. "(The trial) will have an impact on our brand image, but we avoided the worst case scenario," he said, adding Wakita plans to continue selling its Michael Jackson-brand clothing.

In Australia and the Middle East, TV stations interrupted programming to carry live coverage of the verdict in Santa Maria, Calif.

In Australia, 31-year-old Jason Jackson, a Michael Jackson impersonator since age 11, greeted the verdict with relief.

"I supported Michael from the start and I will continue supporting Michael," he said.

5 (Good) Things I’ll Always Remember About Michael Jackson

5. The Young Michael
So pure, so innocent and so damn talented. He put a smile on everyone’s faces and got a lot of kids to start dreaming and believing in themselves.
...

4. The Oprah Interview
He opened up and answered some really tough questions. So much shit had been written about him by then, the interview reminded everyone that he was still a normal human being.
...

3. We Are The World
It showed what sort of heart he had. A big one.
...

2. The Music Videos
Michael took music videos to another level with awesomely crafted and performed pieces. No need for me to mention titles, I know we can all replay the videos in our heads and remember every single move.

1. Winning Those 8 Grammys in 1984
Peerless during this period, it was still a pleasant surprise and delight to see him picking up those 8 Grammys. I actually taped that show and watched it over and over again.

Jelma 2 - Wanna Get Spooked Again?

In case you didn't know, the most successful online series on GUA has been the horror show 'Jelma'. It made its debut in early 2008 and its first run garnered close to 1.2 million views! An achievement yet to be surpassed by any other drama on GUA.

Why was it that sucessful? Well for one, Malaysians are suckers for ghosts and goblins. And on any platform it seems. Also, the story was good and well-researched. And yes, the actors, Norman Hakim, Fauziah Nawi, Naim Daniel etc, did a very good job.

So it was no surprise that since the show ended last year, people have been asking about a sequel. The story itself also had an "open" ending, so of course people were curious to know if there would be a continuation.

And guess what? 'JELMA 2' will be coming to GUA pretty soon! July 6th to be exact.

It will star the names I mentioned above again with a few new faces. And I can guarantee you it will be even scarier this time around. Check out some of the behind-the-scenes photos.

...

Are you scared already? Of course lah, don't bluff... Anyway, do look out for it in July, and here's a little teaser:

For This, I DEMAND Censorship!

So I was at the friendly neighbourhood MPH looking for my favourite mags to pick up when I saw the latest cover of GQ mag...
...

I mean, I AM a fan of Bruno aka Borat aka Sacha Baron Cohen, but YIKES! And the last time someone went almost-naked on GQ, they did this!

Where's the justice lah?

The Frangipani Langkawi Experience

It's the school holidays, so it was time to bring out the brood for some sand, sea and sumptious food. Langkawi was the destination and AirAsia took us there.

Based on the rave reviews on the net, we were ready for fun yet relaxing time at The Frangipani, which is at the edge of Pantai Chenang. Check out the view...

The Frangipani's an eco-friendly resort, so recycling and tree-planting activities are strongly recommended.
... ...

Facilities are pretty decent with 2 swimming pools, bikes for rent, a games area with pool tables, congkak board, books (in Russian) to read etc...
...

And here's the beach...
...

Makan at the main restaurant's a pretty neat experience as well with a spectacular view of the nearby islands and sounds of waves crashing.

We also rented a car to check out what else Langkawi had to offer. And the Makam Mahsuri was a surprisingly interesting attraction.

We then drove down to Kuah and stopped by this famous Langkawi landmark.

For dinner, we headed back to Pantai Chenang to indulge in some seriously good seafood.

More sandcastles were built on the third day and we also checked out the Underwater World.

My previous visits to Langkawi were for work/business, so this was a refreshing experience for me. Plus, the brood were happy, this being their first time and all, so I'd give this trip a two thumbs up!

Mingguan Lelaki's A Hit!

Peeps, thanks to your support, GUA's latest online drama which I penned 'Mingguan Lelaki' is turning out to be a hit. : ) First 9 episodes garnered more than 205,000 views and with this sort of momentum, it should hit our target of 500,000 views for the entire first run of the season.

If you haven't seen it yet, do so now! Only 3 episodes left and things are getting REALLY interesting. Here's the trailer for the final ep...

World Environment Day

Today is World Environment Day and I have a question for you (to borrow from Janet Jackson): What have you done for the environment lately? OK, probably you turned off the lights for an hour a couple of months back, but dudes, more needs to be done to save this only home we have. “Well, what about you, smartass?” you might ask me. No worries, I’ve got a list of stuff sure to impress:

1. I eat more lamb and beef than chicken and fish, cos that way, I'm indirectly supporting the grass-growing industry
2. I have plants in my office
3. My favourite colour has been green since I was 5-years-old
4. I’m a member of the Karam Singh Wallia fan club
5. I’m sticking with my Hyundai instead of buying that Hummer which I totally can afford…

So, there.

My Top 10 Favourite Hard Rock Songs Of The 80s

About a month ago I came up with a similar list for Pop songs, and till today there are still those who feel very tak puas hati. Hey, personal lists are supposed to subjective ok? And the fun is always in the debate! So peeps, feel free to agree or disagree with me again…

10. Rock You Like A Hurricane by Scorpions
It was probably the first rockin’ riff I ever truly appreciated. And who didn’t love Scorpions back then in Malaysia? Just too bad they’re worshipped more for the sappy ballads over here.

9. Why Can’t This Be Love? by Van Halen
‘Jump’ was their biggest hit, but this was the Van Halen tune that got me reaching for the “repeat” button non-stop. Love the keyboards, the understated yet mesmerizing solo and Sammy Hagar brings “heavy tenderness” like no one else. Fact.

8. Dr Feelgood by Motley Crue
Fuh, what a song this is. From the awesome drums by Tommy Lee to the riff to Vince Neil’s vocals, this is the perfect Crue song. The guys had gone clean by that point in time but the music’s as dirty as ever. What a classic.

7. Heavy Chains by Loudness
Oh how I loved this Japanese outfit back then. Bought the T-Shirt as well, and here’s a riff that I practiced day and night to get it right. Didn’t really understand what he was singing about, but it rocked my socks off nonetheless.

6. Every Rose Has Its Thorn by Poison
Yeah, yeah, it’s such a simple power ballad. Yet, I still have it on good rotation on my iPod. And I bet you do too. Don’t bluff lah…

5. Nobody’s Fool by Cinderella
Oh yeah, I was a big Cinderella fan. Bought the T-shirt, bracelet and whatnot. Vocalist Tom Keifer had one of the most unique voices and ‘Nobody’s Fool’, taken from their classic debut album, ‘Night Songs’, demonstrates best the band’s dark and bluesy qualities.

4. Pour Some Sugar On Me by Def Leppard
How can this list not have Def Leppard? So many good songs, cacat drummer and all. But of course this one tops it all. It’s pure fun rock n roll that you could sing along to. Everybody now: “Pour some sugar on me, oooo, in the name of love…”

3. Sweet Child O Mine by Guns N Roses
Overplayed to death a good number of years, but come on, that guitar lick by Slash will forever give you that special sensation to simply rock out. Although, I know you’re still wondering what the answer to “where do we go now?” is, right?

2. Master of Puppets by Metallica
I remember hearing the tune for the first time and was completely blown away by the speed and heaviness of it all. “People can really play like this, ah?” I thought. Duh, they're Metallica, of course can lah! It’s a piece of metal classic. Full stop.

1. Living On A Prayer by Bon Jovi
It had to be a Bon Jovi song, didn’t it? I mean, this was what 80s glam rock was all about: Band members in boots and bandanas, a big sing-along chorus and the video with Bon Jovi himself flying about took the tune a few notches up. God bless Tommy and Gina…

Heboh In JB

So as expected, Jom Heboh in JB this past weekend was hot, humid and happening. But Saturday did begin with a heavy downpour, and that affected the turnout somewhat.

But things got going soon after and the GUA booth saw a steady stream of people, most of whom swarmed ‘Mingguan Lelaki’ leading man, Fazren Rafi.
...

I managed to check out some of the other booths as well and discovered these two interesting things to eat.

First, “Tempe Stick”! I absolutely love tempe and this is the first time I’ve come across the thing stuck on a stick. My verdict? Quite yummy, but not satisfying enough.
...

Then, it was time for “Satay Burger”. Another interesting concept, and it was rather good, I must say. Would have been better if it wasn’t cold already.
...

Back at the GUA booth, things got even more interesting on the first day when Gangstarz 2 winners One Nation Emcees dropped by and did their brand of hip hop gelek…
...

It was absolutely burning hot on Sunday, and a few hundred thousand more people dropped by…

We had Aweera of OIAM3 for day two and dude did his whole “tarik suara” thing of course…
...

It was pandemonium in the evening when OIAM3 champ Tomok dropped by, but damn, I don’t have any pics.

We also debuted the brand new GUA T-shirt and managed to sell quite a number of pieces. The caps we brought also sold out.

And oh yeah, since I got a lot of request about it, here’s the mee rebus I ate on people’s behalf. You know who you are!
